Group G at the World Cup in Russia looks to be relatively straightforward in terms of who is going to go through to the round of 16. Belgium and England should battle it out for the top spot in the group, while Tunisia and Panama will just try to put up a fight. That being said, the games have to be played on the field first.
Belgium
Odds To Win Group G: 1.85
Belgium’s best finish at the World Cup was fourth place in 1986, and they went out in the quarterfinals in 2014 in Brazil. They won their UEFA group to qualify, and Belgium has a ton of talent from front to back. Romelu Lukaku leads the way up front, while Eden Hazard and Kevin Bruyne are two of the best midfielders in the world. Defender Jan Vertonghen and keeper Thibault Courtois were the only players to play in all 10 of Belgium’s qualification games, so they’re settled. Belgium has the talent to make it to the semifinals and with a break or two, they could end up in the final game. However, they have to play to their potential because Belgium have underachieved in their last two tournaments.
England
Odds To Win Group G: 2.22
England won their lone World Cup at home in 1966, but they were disappointing in Brazil, failing to make it out of the group stage. England has a lot of good players, but how many world-class players do they really have? Harry Kane has been great up front, while Marcus Rashford is improving all the time and Raheem Sterling has been as well. The defense is solid enough, but Dele Alli has to be the creative spark they need in midfield to get the ball to the likes of Rashford and Kane. England is a good team, definitely good enough to make it to the round of 16. They might not make it much further than that.
Tunisia
Odds To Win Group G: 11.00
Tunisia is back at the World Cup for the first time since 2006 and in their four World Cup trips, they haven’t made it out of the group stage. They won their CAF group to go to Russia, and their biggest goal-scoring threat is Youssef Msakni, who has 14 goals in 51 appearances for his country, and Wahbi Khazri has scored 11 goals in 33 games for Tunisia from midfield. But Tunisia is probably going to try and soak up pressure and hit their opponents on the counterattack. If they can pick up a draw against England, they might have a chance.
Panama
Odds To Win Group G: 31.00
Panama is in the World Cup for the first time and they finished third in CONCACAF to finally get to the World Cup. This is going to be a learning experience for Panama and they’re going to try and simply limit the damage, especially against Belgium and England. They might go at Tunisia a little, and Gabriel Torres has scored 14 goals in 70 games for his country, but Panama isn’t up to competing at the World Cup just yet.
