Tottenham are basically through to the knockout stages of the Champions League as they have 10 points, but more importantly, they’re in position to win the group after a fantastic performance in their last match. They’ll head to Germany to take on Borussia Dortmund, who have two points and need a huge collapse by Real Madrid to have a chance to make it through.
What To Know About Tottenham
Tottenham had the best performance of the last matchday in the Champions League as they dominated Real Madrid in a 3-1 win at home. Dele Alli scored a pair and Christian Eriksen added a single for Tottenham, but it was a total team performance from front to back as they made the two-time defending Champions League winners look like a second-division team, and they now lead Real Madrid by three points in the group. For all of the talk about their struggles at Wembley Stadium, Tottenham have won both of their Champions League games there so far, scoring six goals and allowing two. But they can’t take their foot off the gas in Germany because Real Madrid will be visiting Apoel Nicosia, which is basically three points for them.
What To Know About Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund could only muster a 1-1 draw at home over Apoel Nicosia in their last Champions League as Raphael Guerreiro scored in the first half, but couldn’t stop an equalizer nor getting a winning goal. Even though Dortmund were always going to be in tough in a group with Tottenham and Real Madrid, they have played terribly in Europe so far and now they might not even get a spot in the Europa League. They have scored just four goals and allowed eight, and the defense isn’t really much of a surprise. It is the lack of goals that is worrying as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored just one, while Mario Gotze and Shinji Kawaga haven’t found the back of the net (although they have combined for three assists). Christian Pulisic has no goals or assists for Dortmund in the Champions League.
Outlook
Dortmund is favored at home at +100, while Tottenham is set at +250 and a draw is rated at +260. The two have met three times as Dortmund won both legs by a score of 5-1 in the Round of 16 in the 2016 Europa League. But Tottenham rolled over Dortmund 3-1 at home in September as Harry Kane scored a pair and Son Heung-Min also scored, while Andriy Yarmolenko managed to score for Dortmund. A win for Spurs will allow them to put one hand on winning the group, and Dortmund have been a mess in Europe, even at home. While they’ll probably be able to score at least a goal on Tottenham, Dortmund likely won’t keep a clean sheet and Tottenham has Kane, who has five goals in the Champions League to put him behind Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. This is a pride game for Dortmund, so it’ll be interesting to see how much they show in Germany.
