In Group G in the Champions League, Porto is tied with Red Bull Leipzig on seven points, four points behind the leaders, Besiktas. Porto will be at home to host Monaco, who are in last place in the group, but they would like to play the spoiler role on December 6th.
What To Know About Monaco
Monaco were ripped 4-1 at home by Red Bull Leipzig in their last Champions League match, and it was basically over by the German team’s third goal in the 31st minute. Jemerson’s own goal after six minutes didn’t get things off to a good start and it was basically all downhill from there. Even Radamel Falcao’s goal in the 43rd minute was responded to by Red Bull Leipzig two minutes later just before halftime and it just wasn’t meant to be for Monaco this year in the Champions League. Falcao has scored two of Monaco’s four goals in this competition, with Rony Lopes and Youri Tielemans adding singles. But more worryingly, Monaco has allowed 11 goals in five games and that isn’t a good recipe to progress in any competition, no matter what it is. On the road in the Champions League, Monaco has a pair of draws with a combined scored of 2-2. Monaco doesn’t even look like it’ll be going to the Europa League, so they might simply decide to focus on Ligue 1 in France.
What To Know About Porto
Porto drew 1-1 at Besiktas in their previous Champions League match as Felipe scored in the 29th minute, but Besiktas equalized before halftime. Vincent Aboubakar has scored three goals for Porto, while six other players have scored a single goal, and Moussa Marega has a pair of assists. Porto also has a goal differential of +2, while Red Bull Leipzig is even, so the Portuguese team has that going for them. They have been a solid team throughout the group stage and they actually lead the group with 10 goals scored, but at home, Porto hasn’t been at their best. They have a win and a loss in two Champions League home games with a combined score of 4-4, and they need a win right now. Red Bull Leipzig is hosting a Besiktas team that has already clinched top spot, so three points should be the goal for Porto.
Outlook
Porto are favored at home at -300 with Monaco coming in at +700 and a draw is rated at +425. These two have met twice, with Porto winning 3-0 in the 2004 Champions League final, and then again by the same scoreline in Monaco on September 26th. Aboubakar scored a pair with Miguel Layun adding another for Porto, and at home, this should be a foregone conclusion as Monaco doesn’t look like they want to be in the Champions League anymore. Porto can’t overlook them, though, and they can’t take their foot off the gas. Red Bull Leipzig will be favored to win in Germany, so Porto needs three points to get them through to the next round.
