The Champions League quarterfinals get underway on April 3rd, and Bayern Munich will head to Sevilla for the first leg of their tie. Bayern Munich swept aside Besiktas easily enough and you might say that they have a favorable draw here. However, Sevilla eliminated Manchester United in the round of 16 and won’t be afraid of the Germans.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich got goals from Thiago Alcantara and Sandro Wagner, as well as an own goal from Gokhan Gonul in a 3-1 win at Besiktas. A 5-0 win at home meant that Bayern Munich went through on an aggregate score of 8-1, and they’re getting goals from all over the pitch. Robert Lewandowski leads the way with five goals, while Thomas Muller has three goals. However, midfielder Corentin Tolisso has three goals as well and defender Joshua Kimmich has chipped in with a couple goals. Bayern Munich is a team that likes to control possession, but they can come at you with speed when they get an opening and they have two of the best strikers in the world up front to put away any chances; Lewandowski is arguably the best striker on the globe. Bayern Munich has made it to the semifinals of the Champions League in three of the last four years, although they fell out in the quarterfinals last season. They have a very good chance to make it back to the final four.
Sevilla
Sevilla stunned Manchester United away from home with a 2-1 win as Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice in the second half within four minutes of each other. It was a very impressive performance over two legs for Sevilla, who were the better team in a 0-0 draw at home in the first leg, and they didn’t come to Manchester United to sit back; they took it to the home team and deserved to go through to the next round. While Bayern Munich gets scoring from all over the pitch, Sevilla are a one-man wrecking crew as Ben Yedder has eight goals, which puts him second to Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 12 goals. While Sevilla went out in the round of 16 in the Champions League last season, they won the previous three editions of the Europa League, so this team has had some European success. With a dangerous front man like Ben Yedder, Bayern Munich can’t take them lightly.
Outlook
Bayern Munich are favored away from home at 1.70, while Sevilla comes in at 4.50 and a draw is listed at 4.00. This is the first time that these two have met. Sevilla has to beware because unlike Manchester United, Bayern Munich will be direct with the ball and not just pass it around on the outside. However, Bayern Munich has to watch out for Ben Yedder because the way that he is playing, he only needs half a chance. Sevilla has to minimize the away goals for Bayern Munich to at least give themselves a chance going back to Germany for the second leg.
