July 29th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn features a boxing match that isn’t getting the hype of Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, but it will likely be a much better match. Mikey Garcia puts his undefeated record on the line against Adrien Broner in a 140-pound catchweight match between a pair of champion boxers. Here is a closer look at this boxing betting showdown.
What You Need To Know About Mikey Garcia
Garcia 36-0 with 30 KO wins and he is a three-division champion as he currently holds the WBC lightweight belt, which is fought at 130 pounds. He is taking this fight because it is a lucrative one with Broner on the other side, and it’ll be interesting to see how Garcia’s speed will translate with the extra weight. This isn’t Garcia’s first fight at super lightweight as he fought Elio Rojas at 138 pounds in July 2016, and came out with a TKO win in the fifth round. Therefore, we know he can fight at this weight, but it’s going to take an even better effort from Garcia to beat Broner.
What You Need To Know About Adrien Broner
Broner is 33-2 with a no-contest on his resume and he has won belts in four divisions, most recently the WBA (Super) super-lightweight belt in October 2015. Broner, when he is on his game, is a very good boxer with solid technique and more power in his punches than you think he has with 24 KO wins. However, that is when he wants to and you never know what you’re going to get with the mercurial Broner, who has had all kinds of trouble outside of the ring with the law. As early as April of this year, Broner was taken into custody as the vehicle he was driving in had bullet holes in it, and Broner claimed he had be shot at. You have to wonder what frame of mind Broner is in from day to day as he has had since May to get his head right for this match. It truly all depends on which Adrien Broner we will see next Saturday night. Is he motivated and ready to go? He had better be against Garcia.
Outlook
The odds have Garcia as a big favorite going into this fight at -350 with Broner coming in at +270. Broner is a bigger name to the casual fight fan, but Garcia has a lot of cache with those who are really in the know in boxing. He has a great combination of speed and power, and he isn’t afraid to get hit. This is also his biggest fight in terms of going against a major opponent and Garcia will want to put on a show on Showtime, which is showing the fight. Broner needs a big performance to prove that he is still a legitimate draw, but if he looks to be the aggressor against Garcia, it might not end well for him as Garcia is very powerful. The added weight will make him even more dangerous.
