The 2018 Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, will be held on March 4th in Hollywood. The nominations haven’t been announced yet, but here is a look at the three pictures that should be up for Best Picture. It can’t get much worse than what happened at the last Oscars when La La Land got the award, but it was supposed to go to Moonlight.
Dunkirk
Odds To Win Best Picture: +300
Dunkirk seems to have everything going for it right now as the early favorite. It has gotten tons of critical acclaim and it is has been very profitable, bringing in $365 million on a budget of $100 million. It stars Fionn Whitehead and Tom Glynn-Carney, along with a host of others (including Tom Hardy and Kenneth Branagh) and it is about the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk France in World War II. But the star is director Christopher Nolan, who has been nominated for Oscars on three occasions: Best Original Screenplay for Momento in 2001, and for Best Picture and Original Screenplay in 2010 for Inception. Then there is the love that Nolan got for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. It seems like Nolan is due for an Oscar nod and critics are calling this movie his best to date.
Phantom Thread
Odds To Win Best Picture: +800
Phantom Thread will be released on Christmas Day and it is based on the fashion world in London in the 1950s. It is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson who is a critical darling who was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for There Will Be Blood back in 2008. In that movie, Anderson directed Daniel Day-Lewis, who won Best Actor for that movie, as well as in My Left Foot in 1990 and Lincoln in 2013. There are rumors that this will be Day-Lewis’ last film and the critics might want to heap all of the praise on this film. There is no doubt that Day-Lewis will be the favorite for Best Actor when those odds come out. Also, the music for the film will be composed by Jonny Greenwood, a member of Radiohead and he also worked on There Will Be Blood.
The Current War
Odds To Win Best Picture: +800
The Current War comes out three days before Phantom Thread and it is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who was the Second Unit Director on 2013 Best Picture winner Argo and has done a lot of work with the television show American Horror Story. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, who was nominated for Best Actor in 2015 for The Imitation Game, and it is about the rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, who were battling to come up with an electric system that the entire world could use. That is right up the alley of the Academy Awards, and it will surely be a critical darling, even if it doesn’t do what the above movies do at the box office. This is definitely a film to keep an eye on as award-season approaches.
