The 2017 edition of Wimbledon just got underway on Monday. The women’s draw is wide open as Serena Williams is not participating due to the fact that she’s pregnant. As we saw the French Open, that means anything can happen. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the four Wimbledon betting favorites on the women’s side.
Petra Kvitova
Kvitova is a two-time winner at Wimbledon as she won in 2011 and again in 2014, but she went out in the third round in 2015 and the second round in 2016. She won the WTA Elite Trophy last November in China, and she is coming off a win at the Birmingham Classic heading into Wimbledon, so the Czech Republic star has some momentum. Kvitova is seeded 10th in the draw, and she could be more dangerous the longer she is in this tournament. If she can avoid an early-round pitfall, watch out for Kvitova.
Karolina Pliskova
Pliskova also hails from the Czech Republic, and she lost in the U.S. Open final to Germany’s Angelique Kerber in her first Grand Slam final. She has never made it past the second round of Wimbledon, but since last year, she has reached the quarterfinals in three straight Grand Slams, so this could be the tournament in which she breaks out. Pliskova has won three tournaments in 2017, taking the Brisbane International in January, the Qatar Total Open in June and then the Eastbourne International right before Wimbledon. It seems to be all coming together for the third-seeded Pliskova right now, and the more momentum she gets, the longer her Wimbledon run could be.
Garbine Muguruza
Muguruza lost the 2015 Wimbledon final to Serena Williams, but then got her revenge in an upset win over Williams at the French Open last year. Outside of 2015, Muguruza has never made it past the second round at Wimbledon, and she has yet to win a tournament so far in 2017. However, the Spanish player is seeded 14th in the tournament and she is a very experienced player that doesn’t scare easily. Since committing herself to singles, Muguruza has gotten better and better and she could be in line for a deep run into Wimbledon.
Johanna Konta
Konta will get a lot of support on and off the court as she hails from Eastbourne, England, but she has never really fared well here. She had four exits in the first round before reaching the second round last year, and her best performance in a Grand Slam has come in the Australian Open, where she went to the semifinals in 2016, and then the quarterfinals in 2017. Konta has won two titles this year as she won the Sydney International in January and then the Miami Open in April, so she has played well this year. She just has to keep her nerves about her because there is going to be a lot of pressure to win. The last woman from the United Kingdom to win the singles title here was Virginia Wade in 1977, so Konta is playing for history. She just has to go out and play her game.
