The 2017 French Open moves into the second week of action. While the women’s side of things has been completely unpredictable, most of the heavy hitters remain on the men’s side. Here’s a closer look at the odds:
French Open – Men’s Draw
It doesn’t come as much surprise that Rafael Nadal (1.53) is still the heavy favorite to win the French Open. He hasn’t won it in two years but prior to that, had won nine of the previous 10 French Opens. He has looked absolutely phenomenal in the first week of action as he hasn’t even dropped a set. Never mind dropping a set, Nadal has barely lost any games. He lost a total of six in his first match, eight in his second, one in his third and five in his fourth. He could meet Novak Djokovic in the semifinals if both of them with their next match.
Speaking of Djokovic (6.00), he has looked pretty good for the most part but he did have one match where he struggled. Three of his first four matches have been straight sets wins but he did struggle against Diego Schwartzman in the third round. He was down two sets to one before winning the final two sets to advance. He’ll have a tough matchup against Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals.
Thiem (13.25) is actually the No. 6 seed at this event and he’s cruised rather easily to this point. He hasn’t dropped a single set to this point. He plays particularly well on clay, which is important to note. He could spring the upset against Djokovic in the quarters. Thiem is 21-4 on clay this year and was 25-7 in 2016 and 20-6 in 2015. The 23-year-old Austrian made it to the French Open semifinals last year before losing in straight sets to Djokovic.
Stan Wawrinka (9.00) – a former French Open winner – has decent odds to win this event mostly because of his draw. He’s on the top half, which means he won’t have to face Nadal/Djokovic/Thiem until the final. Wawrinka has a tough test against No. 15 Gael Monfils in the fourth round and he might have to play Andy Murray, but the tougher tests are all in the other side of the bracket.
Speaking of Murray (10.00), he’s never won the French Open, but he is the top seed at the event. He has had some challenges to date, losing a set in the first and second rounds. He needed seven wins in two sets against Juan Martin del Potro in the third round, although he did beat him in straight sets. Murray is just 7-4 on clay this year, which is a discouraging number.
WTA – French Open
The women’s side of the French Open has been nothing short of a disaster for the best players in the world. Remember that Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova didn’t even participate. No. 1 seed Angelique Kerber lost in the first round. Garbine Muguruza, the defending champ and No. 4 seed, lost in the fourth round. No. 6 Dominika Cibulkova, No. 7 Johanna Konta, No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 9 Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 10 Venus Williams are all also out.
Simon Halep (3.00) is the current favorite while Elina Svitolina (6.00), Kristina Mladenovic (6.50) and Karolina Pliskova (7.50) are next.
